BSA 3D Class 5

 BSA 3D

Hi!

Today we worked on character concepts. I already had a pretty good idea of what style I wanted to do and what I wanted my character to look like. I drew up some alternate hairstyles, sweaters, and the potential of having a bandaid across her nose. I then did some colour paletttes. I originally wanted to have a very light colour palette (Top Left) as I wanted to set the film in a dark environment, but after playing around with some of the colours I also really liked the darker sweater look (Bottom Center). I haven't decided which one I will go with. I do like the poses though so will be using them for my character poses.

I started sketching out a skeleton for my character but I don't really know how rig skeletons work so I don't know if it is correct. I debated changing the sunflower on her sweater to a begonia as it is a symbol of caution or warning but I decided that I liked the sunflower better.

Out of class I drew up a neater version of Layla's turnaround. I then coloured several front views with the colour palettes from class.

I prefer the first two palettes. The first palette is the original colour scheme as I wanted a lighter palette as I plan to have a darker setting and it will help the character stand out. One issue with that palette is that the hair and skin tone lack contrast. I do really like the second palette too but I am worried that the clothes will be lost in the darker setting. I feel like both capture different elements of the character, as the first makes her look more naïve and innocent while the second goes better with the horror genre and the bright eyes look eerie but also more cautious and aware. I also feel the second palette makes her look slightly older too, making it more believable that she would be left home alone.
I also included a band aid on her nose in these pictures but I don't think I will carry this feature through. I also experimented with a different hairstyle, pigtails instead of a ponytail, and with adding patches on her sweater which I think I will include in her design.

I then coloured the rest of the turnaround with the first palette as I haven't decided on which one I want to go with.

Her outfit and colour palette was heavily inspired by Ai Ohto from the anime Wonder Egg Priority, a psychological horror.

You can see this influence with the shorts and sweater combo, the sunflower on the front, and the bright yellow sweater in one of the palettes. I hope my character is unique enough to not be seen as copying.
My next goal is to look for more 3D references and to draw neater versions of the poses.
